Lignumvitae Key is one of the islands in the Florida Keys that is just north of Lower Matecumbe Key. This island has the highest elevation in the archipelago at 5 meters and is said to rank among the Keys that are the most beautiful. It is noted as one of the keys that were never a settlement thus its natural beauty is preserved today. It is home of the Lignumvitae Key State Botanical Park and is covered with tropical hardwoods that are typically rare in this area.
The Lignumvitae Botanical Park is a State Park that offers a variety of things you can do when visiting Lignumvitae Key. First of all, since the island can be reached only by water, there are boats that leave from Robbie’s Marina daily. You can also rent boats, kayaks, and canoes from the local marinas. However, if renting a boat, make sure you are aware of how to navigate around the island since there are several underwater grass flats that could cause problems. Canoes and kayaks should have no problem with the grass flats. While boating out to the island, you have a great chance to see some beautiful marine wildlife such as manatees, sharks, rays, and dolphins.
Fishing is another popular pastime for those visiting around the island. You can fish for Snapper, Spanish Mackerel, Snook, Bonefish, and Tarpon. When in season, you can even fish for Stone Crab and Caribbean Spiny Lobster (requires a Florida Saltwater Fishing License with crab and lobster stamps).
Other activities that you can do in the park include snorkeling, wildlife viewing and going on guided tours. The old Matheson House serves as the visitor center and is open Friday through Sunday from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
